Knowing others is wisdom, but knowing oneself is enlightenment. Conquering oneself is strength, and contentment brings riches.

Chapter 33

He who knows others is wise;
He who knows himself is enlightened.
He who conquers others has power;
He who conquers himself is strong.
He who knows contentment is rich.
He who perseveres has purpose.
He who does not lose his center endures;
He who dies yet his power remains has longevity.

What's Master DudeWay Say?

This chapter of the Tao Te Ching emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and inner strength. Toyota's philosophy of Kaizen, which means "continuous improvement," fits well with this teaching. Just as Toyota focuses on constant refinement and betterment of its processes, we too should strive for self-improvement, conquering ourselves and knowing our limits. This path to enlightenment and strength will lead us to contentment and a sense of true richness in life. By staying centered and persevering, we achieve longevity and maintain our power even in the face of challenges.

Dudeism Abides

To know others is smart, but knowing yourself is key. Overcoming yourself is strength, finding contentment, prosperity.

Know yourself, find strength,
Embrace Kaizen, constant growth,
Centered, live with purpose.
