Weapons are instruments of evil, and victory in war should not be celebrated. Embrace peace and treat life with respect.

Chapter 31

Fine weapons are instruments of evil,
They are hated by people,
Therefore, those who possess the Way do not dwell with them.
In ordinary life, a gentleman regards the left side as the place of honor,
In war, the right side is the place of honor.
Weapons are instruments of evil,
Not the tools of a gentleman,
When there is no choice but to use them, it is best to remain calm and detached.
Victory should not be celebrated with joy,
For to rejoice in victory is to delight in killing.
Those who delight in killing cannot achieve their ambitions in the world.
In auspicious events, the left is favored,
In inauspicious events, the right is favored.
The lieutenant general is positioned on the left,
The supreme general is positioned on the right.
This means that war is treated as a funeral rite.
When many people are killed,
They should be mourned and lamented.
Victorious in war, treat it as a funeral rite.

What's Master DudeWay Say?

Picture the movie "Gandhi," where the great leader, Mahatma Gandhi, promotes non-violence and peace. This chapter of the Tao Te Ching shares a similar message, emphasizing that weapons are instruments of evil and victory in war should not be celebrated. Like Gandhi, we should seek harmony, remain detached in times of conflict, and treat life with respect. War is treated as a funeral rite, mourning the loss of life, rather than rejoicing in triumph.

Dudeism Abides

Weapons bring harm, and rejoicing in war is not cool. Seek harmony and value life.

Weapons bring darkness,
Seek harmony, value life,
Mourn war's victory.
